Coping With The Rain

By Angel Apurillo

"You have to accept the storms and the rainy days and the things in life that you sometimes don't want to face."
- Bai Ling

In the Philippines, there are only two seasons, the dry season which is equivalent to summer in other countries. And then there is the rainy season.

For many, it is the season of floods, heavy rains, typhoons, heavy traffic jams and so on. And its true. At least twenty typhoons visit the country every year and it would really affect people in general.

Some of the consequences brought by the rainy season are:

  • Floods - When heavy rains pour, it would mean flooded areas that paralyzes both education and businesses.
  • Traffic Jam - When stuck in traffic, we lose time and we become less productive.
  • Sickness - When we get soaked from rain, we are vulnerable to flu, fever, coughs and colds.

And every year, we hear the same complaints but we don't come up with a long term solution to these problems. We always bitch about problems that we made in the first place like throwing trash anywhere and undisciplined orderliness.

For this article, I'd like to share my practices to protect myself from the rains and by own little way, help solve problems that it brings.

  • Dispose trash properly. The leading cause of flooding in the Metro. Its a simple responsibility that we are all required to do.
  • Bring protection against rain. You're not vulnerable and not even water proof. An umbrella wouldn't hurt an ego.
  • Listen to the news and weather forecasts. Understand that it is a forecast and not a prediction. Anything can happen so at least get yourself informed.
  • Take lots of vitamins. Its your protection against flu and other sickness that might render you immobilized. Take lots of vitamins and fruits to equip you with enough durability.
  • Be prepared. Store some canned goods and easy to eat meals in case of emergency. Check and fix anything that might make your house.
  • Help and reach out. Get out and extend a helping hand to people affected by the calamity. Whether its by donating or by just helping out, it would mean a lot to the victims. It would also give you self satisfaction and lighter feeling.

I hope this list helps you with dealing with the rainy season. Although the rain gives us a cooler temperature, its better to sleep without worrying about floods.

Kapish!
