Obsolete Beliefs

"We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."
 - Walt Disney

Here in the Philippines, there are so many superstitious beliefs that were passed on from generation to generation. They even believe on movies and shows that showcases these beliefs. There is nothing wrong in believing and applying them in our lives. Really...

But time has changed, places has changed and even people changed. For me, some superstitious beliefs are already out dated and obsolete. Let me count these beliefs:

  • Pagpag (Shake Off). This is a Filipino belief that if you attend a wake, you need to go to somewhere else so that bad spirits won't follow you home. What if the wake is just your neighbor?!? Do you still need to go somewhere else? Or is the bad spirit that stupid to follow you to Starbucks???
  • Sukob. A person can't be married at the same year as their sibling's marriage. According to elders, its a bad omen. My suggestion is to go live in. Anyway, marriage is just a piece of paper and we don't have divorce in the country as of yet.
  • Oro Plata Mata. Its translated as Gold, Silver and Death. The number of steps of a staircase inside a house should not be equal to death. What if the worker is miscounted and its a concrete staircase???
  • Turning Plates. In the middle of a lunch or dinner, if a person leaves the table and took off and the others are not yet done of their meal, they should turn their plates so that person is ensured for their travel. This makes no sense at all for me.
  • Pansit For Longer Life. Then why isn't there no pansit in the operating or emergency rooms in hospitals??? Or if there was a road accident, why isn't there available pansit?
  • Sweeping At Night. The elder said that it's like sweeping good luck away from the home. With the dust that our house collect at any given time, would it be good luck if the house is clean and tidy at all times?
  • Blame It On The Elves. This is pure stupidity. Don't blame others if you lost something like keys, phones etc. Those elves are peacefully living in North Pole making gifts for Christmas. And look for it with your eyes, not your mouth! Hahaha!
Again, there is nothing wrong if you still believe and follow these beliefs. All I am saying is that this world changed a lot for years. Don't let these beliefs hinder us from development of ourselves. We can still look back to it to guide us but we should move forward.

Kapish!
